GSIA Master Class

The IAGG Global Social Initiative on Ageing (GSIA) invites applications from early career scholars for Master-class on Population Ageing & Work-Care Challenges in a Global Context

Purpose
To build capacity among early career scholarsin how the care needs of ageing populations around the world are/are not being met through adaptations in family relationships, developments in public and social policy, and change in employment practices.

Where

Dublin, Ireland, April 22-26, 2015 in association with the IAGG European Region Conference

Eligibility:  Be registered in a doctoral program, or be within three years of having been awarded a PhD in a social science subject relevant to the master-class theme.

Program

Lectures by established scholars, individual mentor sessions, workshops, IAGG-ER conference symposium.  

Cost

€150, to include all Master-class sessions and the Welcome Dinner. (Some bursaries will be available)

Each participant will also have an additional mentor session of 45 minutes, arranged individually with their personal mentor, to take place during the IAGG conference, on Thursday 23– Saturday 25 April.

The focus of the Master Class will be on supporting participants to conceptualise topics, build personal research agendas, learn more about how to get their work published and develop their scholarly networks.

Lecturers will all be asked to focus their 30 minute talks on: (i) Key issues and debates; (ii) Theoretical and / or methodological challenges; (ii) Scope for developing new research.

Experts participating in the GSIA Master Class on Population Ageing and the Challenges of Integrating Paid Work and Family Care Work 

Dr Janet Fast, Professor of Human Ecology, University of Alberta, Canada, whose research interests include the economics of aging and family/friend care; public policy (health and continuing care, labour and, income security). A major theme in Janet’s research is the paid and unpaid work of family members, and she is currently co-leading a large international, multidisciplinary team investigating the juxtaposition of costs and contributions of adults with chronic illness and disability. On the cost side, the team is examining the consequences of recent health and social policy reform for family and friends who care for aging adults with chronic illness and disability, and on the contributions side, the productive and social engagement of aging adults. Her work also includes research on workplace policy as it relates to family members’ ability to balance paid work and family demands.
Dr Norah  Keating, Professor of Family Gerontology, University of Alberta, Canada and University of Swansea, UK,  whose research interests include the issues faced by older adults and their families. As Director of IAGG’s Global Social Initiative on Ageing, Norah’s research and capacity-building focuses on families and aging, liveability of older adults, and care. She is engaged in international research on liveability of communities for older adults in Australia, Canada and South Africa, and is also involved in a program of research on economic, health and social costs of care in Canada and China.
Dr Kate O’Loughlin, Associate Professor of Behavioural and Social Sciences in Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Sydney, Australia, whose primary research interests and expertise are healthy ageing, with a focus on behaviours and exposures across the life course and the effect of these on health outcomes in later life; health policy; occupational health and rehabilitation; and the baby boom cohort. Kate was a key member of the Ageing Baby Boomers in Australia project and leads Sydney University’s contribution to the international project ‘Older Workers and Caregiving in a Global Context’, in which Janet Fast and Sue Yeandle are also team members.
Dr Sue Yeandle, Professor of Sociologyand Director of CIRCLE, Centre for International Research on Care, Labour and Equalities, University of Leeds, UK. Sue specialises in the study of care, work and family life. She led a major UK study on ‘Carers, Employment and Services’, and has studiedprogrammes of carer support, how technology installed in the home affects the everyday lives of frail older people and those who care for them, and recently co-edited (with TeppoKröger) ‘Combining Paid Work and Family Care: policies and experiences in international perspective’, Policy Press, which covers developments in work-care reconciliation in Australia, England, Finland, Sweden, Japan and Taiwan.
