On February 15, 2013, concluding its 51st session, UN's Commission for Social Development (CSocD) approved five draft resolutions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council, covering a range of issues pivotal to the promotion of societies rooted in respect for the dignity of every individual, from youth and disability, to ageing and African development. Several of the texts approved highlighted the critical importance of empowering people and of their participation in advancing social development.

Organized by IAGG, the Japan Geriatrics Society (JGS) and the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology (NCGG), the 4th Master Class on Ageing is aimed to train young geriatricians with research potential. Despite the increase of both the aging population and the number of institutionalized older people, clinical research in nursing home is still scarce. Research is however essential to improve the quality of care in nursing home. The improvement of the quality of care in nursing home will rely on the future evidences from researches performed in these settings, their feasibility in real life condition and the successful dissemination of these new clinical evidences.

The event will take place at the Institut de l’Envelliment of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain on March 13-14, 2014 and will deal with the following topics:
-    Frailty: Biology of frailty and aging, Physical frailty and age-related body composition modifications, Cognitive frailty, Frailty in clinical practice and public health, Clinical trials and therapeutics.

The Irish Gerontological Society (IGS) will host IAGG’s 8th European congress in Dublin on the theme “Unlocking the Demographic Dividend”. It aims to tap into the growing awareness that gerontological research can help us to understand the collective and personal benefits that we gain from population ageing, a better understanding of the barriers to realizing the full potential of the Demographic Dividend, and the advances in gerontological science which allow these barriers to be overcome in the most effective way possible.

As member of IAGG's North American Region, the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) presented a bid to host IAGG's 21st World Congress in San Francisco, USA for 2017. The Council voted unanimously in favour of this candidacy in view of GSA's long experience in organizing major events and of the city's important conference facilities.
