IAGG | Global Aging Research Network - GARN

Global Aging Research Network - GARN

With the support of the World Health Organization, IAGG's Global Ageing Research Network (GARN) aims to get together 500 major worldwide Centres of Excellence dedicated to social gerontology, basic sciences and clinical gerontology. Their experts will be invited to:

- exchange information about all types of topics related to Gerontology and Geriatrics
- set up contacts between all actors in these fields: specialists, academics, industry, health authorities, other scientific networks etc
- be involved in highlighting the importance of  Gerontology in the world

The identification work has been provided by IAGG members: national scientific societies from each country, regional presidents and current Collaborating Centres. More than 1200 potential candidates concerned by social, biological, behavioural and clinical gerontology have already been listed: 634 contacts came from Europe, 385 from North America, 30 from South America, 151 from Asia/Oceania and 11 came from Africa.

The selection process

2010 was dedicated to building the Network. All the identified candidates were invited to go through the candidacy validation process and to fill out a questionnaire as thoroughly as possible, in order for us to collect more details about them. 499 questionnaires were returned to date and continue to arrive.

Future action plan

In 2011, once criterias defined and validated, applicants will be selected to become full members of the Network after final approval of the Scientific Committee. Announcement of confirmed membership is scheduled during July 2011. After this selection process, it is planned to use the IAGG website: to develop efficient exchanges within the Network community and to create a special section dedicated to the Network, including centre information and key words.

In 2012, the Network will organize directly or jointly different actions for its members on all aspects of Ageing. We will keep you informed.
